Gorgeous pictures- August 26, 2001 drariadne (Earth) 70 out of 70 found this review helpful
This is a beautiful book. There is a poem on one page, and a full color picture to go with it on the opposite page. The book begins whith the "30 Days Hath September" poem, and a couple of shorter poems, and finally gets to what I consider the meat of the book- her poems for each month of the year. She has written one poem for each month. They are rather long for young children, but most will sit through a line or two and they will love looking at the pictures, and that will gradually increase their interest in listening to the poem. What a beautiful way to introduce the months of the year to a small child. And for those parents looking for seasonal/monthly poems to read with their children, these are wonderful. The book was originally published in 1927, and the drawings/paintings are of an older style than many of the newer books available. This particular reprinting is well done, with a cloth reinforced binding and a good quality medium weighted paper for the pages. The colors are lovely and the pictures are appealing to children (well, to mine at least).
Awesome and warm story!!! June 16, 2005 Wendy C. (Ontario, Canada) 48 out of 50 found this review helpful
We love all of her books and buy them 1 at a time as we can afford them. In an age of big in your face pop up books and childrens books that make your eyes hurt these books are a wonderful find. As always the illustrations are beautiful - this particular book I would love to get a duplicate and frame the pictures. I read all the reviews first but few had actual specifics about the actual invdividual stories, so that's what I've done here. I hope it helps others know what wonderful books they are. I wish they were easier to find in Canada.
Anyhow this book is all poems :
the Thirty days has september poem, The months poem, january begins the year, february is next... etc. Then the hours poem- WE LOVE THIS ONE... One and two are walking, three and four are playing, five and six are eating... etc. Then there is The Days of the week poem, my now 4 yr old knows this one by heart... Tell me what you do all day? busy I am but listen pray. Monday is my milking day, Tuesday skimming off the cream, etc. Then the rest of the book is a poem about each month and with a black and white drawing with it on the same page and then on the opposit page a full BEAUTIFUl drawing to with it as well. Absolutely awesome!!!
Classic December 6, 2003 britneyxyz (USA) 27 out of 28 found this review helpful
This book is a classic children's book. The poems by Elsa Beskow are beautiful. The drawings portray the seasons and the personalities of the characters pictured - down to the very last little plant. This is a perfect book for education - seasons, months, weather for younger children and flower naming, words and prose for older children. This book is a collection of poems, not a story book. I enjoy this book, as do my children.
lovely to look at December 7, 2007 H. Hawkes (AZ) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My boys and I just love this book. It is so nice to look at and the story is loads of fun. In fact there isn't a book by Beskow we don't love!
Classic, Beautiful Children's Literature August 7, 2009 Emma Beth (CO USA) This book has lovely classic poems for each month and drawings that speak to the child in you, no matter what your age. I am buying a copy to read and keep and one to take apart and frame for my children's rooms.
