The Official Michael Jackson Opus January 2, 2010 photowhoseit 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I just finished reading MJ's Opus. What struck me was it's totally positive. Not a word about the troubles he faced. The table of contents goes right to the essence of his being. Here are the names of the chapters; Child Star, Voice, Composer, Moonwalk (discussed him as an innovator of dance), Vision (discussed how he was so incredibally progressive ), One Glove (How he used fashion to build himself into a global icon), Friend, Heart (his humanitarian efforts), Art Lover, and Global Icon. There are tons never before seen of high quality photos. There are also plenty of photos you have seen before but have more in the photo because they haven't been cropped. There are no photos that have the most important part (like MJ''s face) in the spine of the book. I only learned a few new things about MJ but what was presented was done so in a very eloquent way. My favorite contribution in the book was written by the person who won the essay contest put out by the [...] website. It's on page 393. The contest topic was "What Does Michael's Legacy Mean to You?" The 25 year old winner had a really good handle on what MJ was all about. She has a future as a writer. I also liked the fan art. I think it is what MJ would have wanted in the book. Some of the fan art isn't all that great but MJ loved his fans talented or not. Of the 26 fan art pictures, I liked about 1/2 of them. There is one I absolutely love. He is dressed like Peter Pan. He's on his toes with knees bent like the dance pose we so often see. The background is wooded with mountains in the distance. There are butterflies around his head and a blimp type airship. That artist has promise. She captured the essence of MJ. Before I read that these were fan art I thought that one was done by Giorgio or Nordahl the artists MJ had commisioned to do art work for him. The book itself weighs 16 1/2 pounds; with the case it weighs 23 pounds. I weighed it. So it does not weigh as much as they say in the media.
I can't wait to get the video reality card Opus has promised. I hope the footage is never before seen footage. Another addition that would have been nice is having the text in the book duplicated in a smaller paperback and included with the big book. It was a pain in the rear trying to read from such a huge book. I would have liked to curl up in bed and read instead of bending over a coffee table. If you want to know more about MJ's molestation charges read Redemption by Geraldine Hughes and The Michael Jackson Conspiracy by Aphrodite Jones. My heart breaks when I think what the media did to such a sweet, loving, and caring man. Until I got to know who MJ was, I did not believe in God. Now I know there has to be a God. Someone like MJ is not put on this earth by accident.
Previewed on the Today Show November 26, 2009 TAMTAM (St. Louis, MO) 20 out of 26 found this review helpful
This book was previewed on the Today show. I can't wait to purchase it since it is the book authorized by MJ's estate and it was something he was working on before he died.
This is the only real item I want since his passing. Everything else is just people grabbing for dollars. The good thing about this book is that the profits go to his mother and kids. They should be the only ones to benefit.
Someone made a comment to my preview (please read it for yourself) that the book is over $200 and Blah, Blah, Blah.....
As I said to them in my reply,"We live in a country of choice. If you don't want it, don't buy it. Welcome to America."
There are people out there scamming MJ stuff that won't be worth the price of a postage stamp in a few years. I would rather have something "OFFICIAL" as opposed to fraudulent. This price is cheap compared to some of the stuff (fake & real) people are forking over.
I now own this book. I did not pay the price that is listed on Amazon. Trust me. It is worth it. I bought 2 of Madonna's Sex books when they first came out and only paid approx $50 each. I opened one and kept the other sealed. Now people are selling their new on Amazon for over $700. I could only afford one MJ book but I keep it in a special box and only handle it wearing gloves.
I have no intention of selling this book because it contains alot of MJ's personal photos and drawings. Stuff never seen. If you are a true MJ fan, this is definitely worth the price.
I suggest if you buy it, you treat it with care and not allow alot of people to handle it.
Opus Dispels Myths February 16, 2010 William Frank (Leadville, CO United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Official Michael Jackson Opus (Leather Bound)
I consider myself a book lover, and I'm very pleased with the addition of the MJ Opus to my library. After examining and reading it, I'm frankly surprised it doesn't cost more. That it was produced in China is doubtless the reason for what I consider its relatively low cost. I find the quality of the materials exceptional: a substantial binding, high quality, heavy paper, and the printing especially of the color pictures is outstanding. The pictures of the paintings MJ commissioned are especially well printed. One, printed on two full pages (with another two pages showing a sketch with handwritten directions from MJ), should put to rest the myth that MJ had a painting of the Last Supper over his bed at Neverland with himself in the center as Christ. That controversial painting, by Nate Giorgio, was of 8 (not 12) of some of MJ's heroes, men who inspired him. Examination of the excellent detail of the picture shows it is definitely not a painting of a supper. A long table piled with books and papers is suggestive of a board meeting, with MJ chairman and on either side of him are presidents, scientists and entertainers: Lincoln, JFK, Edison, Einstein, Disney, Chaplin, Elvis and Little Richard. In their infamous raid on Neverland The police photographed MJ's bedroom with that painting at the head of his bed. It was featured at his 2005 trial, with everyone calling it his "last supper painting" up to the day of his funeral. This is one of the myths this book should help dispel.
The paintings show a side of MJ rarely glimpsed before, and even the paintings he used publicly were not shown in their entirety previously. I find them very revealing of Michael the art lover and art collector. They also open a rare window into his vision of the world and of himself in the world. Most of the photographs printed in Opus have not been used publicly before. MJ hired some of the best photographers and artists around, and I feel it is safe to say the photographs and paintings alike in Opus meet his high standards of excellence. As for the complaints about the resolution of some of the pictures, many of the older ones were shot using regular 35mm film and were not originally intended for high resolution applications. Yet I find even their resolution surprisingly good despite being grainy.
I find some of the essays disappointing and feel they are too short, but the book was intended primarily as a picture book with the text only being supplemental. True there is little about his family. The book is about MJ and his career (and opus is a Latin word that means "work"), not about the publicity seeking Joe Jackson or MJ's siblings, nor even about his Mom. I feel it does a good job of protecting his privacy and his personal life, while providing valuable insights into the complex person he was. I believe the Opus is a good presentation, both in essays and pictures, of the many facets of Michael Jackson.

This is only fitting for the record holder of most records ever sold! I don't see how that record will ever be broken especially with technology today.
I grew up with MJ, so I know that there will never be another.
If you are a big fan and can afford this book, you have to have it.
You won't need 3/4 of the others that you have, or will purchase.
I wish he was still here.
The only one I would trust (except for Moonwalk, Dancing The Dream, & the Visual Documentary) December 2, 2009 cinnamon 12 out of 16 found this review helpful
Who do you think knows you best? Your family, close friends, the ones you always work with, right? Same thing even when it comes to MJ. I would trust it when the information comes from the ones who really knew him. People seem to tend to believe anything that comes from a source that is not so close to him, but tend to ignore anything from real close source, and I ask why?
This book has the real information coming from real source.
And I feel happy for MJ that this book made it because I know he was an admirer of this kind of classical coffee table book since early 80s(Read "Michael Jackson, Before He Was King"), and he once even suggested the editor of "Moonwalk" to make it coffee table book sytle.
Plus I heard that this comes with an Augmented Reality Card image & sound system ([...]), which allows you to see MJ's footage 3D when you place it near your PC, and that the footage would be regularly updated. I guess MJ meant to use this sometimes to contact his fans... Now we will never be able to see his new messages on this vertual imaging card system, but I think it won't hurt to exect a new footage coming every week...(Since this book is endorsed by MJ himself and the Estate, and since MJ was thrilled by the high tech feature of the card as the pioneer that he was, he might have offered some new footage for it...who knows?)
Good job, opus media, I feel that this augmented reality device is quite symbolic of MJ as a pioneer, innovator. This hith-tech card coming with a leather bound, classical-looking book, it's OLD BUT NEW, which is exactlly MJ, who loved old, who loved new, and who loved everything that was amazing.
